Dr. Sonali Zaveri from Child to Child came to have a workshop in ADAPT, Mumbai. We are always blaming our teaching methodology in our country but we don't show them any way how to teach? But I am aware now after I have took the workshop of Child to Child approach of teaching. Most of the time we are manipulating and decorating our children according to the school or teachers. We are send to the poem contest but the poem was written by the teacher, we are requested to do speech but the speech was written by the teachers, we are always asked to do something but not to involve in the activities for learning. I still remember that in environment day I have read the poem written by my teacher in poem contest in City Hall Pokhara.
Child to Child approach help me to think in a different way to teach the children. It is basically the active health approached that engage children in health and developmental issues. The step that are used for the children by child to child approach are very good. The steps are 1. understanding the problem 2. finding more 3. discussing and planning finding 4. action plan 5. evaluate 6. doing it better
For example:
Step 1: a child is sick in school because of Malaria. Then the children understand the cause of Malaria. In this process of understanding problem teacher can help in different ways.
Step 2: It is link with the society. Student go to home and find out in the home, relatives, and in the community that what are the cause of Malaria. They find out more things such as not having mosquito net during night, dirty nearby home, etc.
Step 3: They will discuss on the finding in their community in the school. They are know more from their peer and friends and they themselves plan the action to be taken to decrease Malaria. They plan for the drama, exhibition, art competition, role play, discussion, street play and many more.
Step 4: They do action in the society or in the school. They do role play, visit, play card visit, street play etc what they have decided in their group.
Step 5: They will evaluate their action plan. They will find out what are the good and what are not good? They will enjoy or not. They will evaluate how many of them started using mosquito net during night.
Step 6: After evaluation every new comer in the school are informed about malaria by the old student in the school.
We do many activities to understand the workshop. We find it very productive for the active learning in children. Children are active in every step and they learn more thing in this process. If we all follow the process in the school for teaching students then I am sure that our student will be more talent and they will change the country in coming days.
